The Glicko rating system and Glicko-2 rating system are methods for assessing a player’s strength in games of skill, such as chess and Go. It was invented by Mark Glickman as an improvement of the Elo rating system , and initially intended for the primary use as a chess rating system. Glickman’s principal contribution to measurement is “ratings reliability”, called RD, for ratings deviation. The formulas used for the systems can be found on the Glicko website. The RD measures the accuracy of a player’s rating, with one RD being equal to one standard deviation. Twice the RD is added and subtracted from their rating to calculate this range. After a game, the amount the rating changes depends on the RD: the change is smaller when the player’s RD is low since their rating is already considered accurate , and also when their opponent’s RD is high since the opponent’s true rating is not well known, so little information is being gained.
How Tiers (ranks) work
The first 4 ranks are split into 9 sub-ranks. The developers have not shared yet precise info on the rank distribution in Dota Auto Chess, but through an API it is possible to find out all the rank names and the MMR range required for each one. The following data has been displayed on a few public forums. I have not used the API personally, and I suggest to not utilize it: even if it is accessible by anyone who knows the IP, it is still something hosted on a remote server that belongs to the devs.
I made a table for both systems, based on percentiles and ranking. and its marketing and philosophy is better targeted at casual players than Dota’s, and sometimes you get really tough match ups that you will definitely lose/cannot contest.
Ranked systems in autobattler titles like Underlords may seem confusing at first. Valve developers working on Underlords have confirmed that the top four players in any match are considered winners and earn matchmaking rank points to climb up the ranked ladder. The higher you place, the more points you earn. The opposite is true for the bottom four.
All ranks vary from I to V, with I being the lowest division inside a rank and V being the highest. Lords of White Spire is a unique rank with no divisions. Now, there are no hidden numbers and progression is clear and predictable. Players earn points for first place and lose in eighth. That number decreases until fourth place, which is the last where players can earn points.
From fifth to eight, the lower you place, the more MMR points you lose, as shown on the image below. Players must reach a certain number of MMR points to rank up. You can play competitive matches with up to two friends in your party, but doing so will affect the number of MMR points you earn. Valve shows the difference on the table below.

How much MMR is an average Divine 1 player? I calibrated at ancient 7 on a new account max calibration and had 5k MMR and got Divine 1 the next game. Pretty sure medals don’t care that much about MMR anymore and it’s how you perform in the games dmg, last hits, etc. Ancient 7 – Divine 1 is a big gap, a factor there is that the MMR medals take your party rank into account before Divine.
The process of matchmaking is based solely on MMR and not on a player’s division So players A+B’s team will have a ranking completely unrelated to players.
On December 6 Valve published an article about ranked Matchmaking on Dota2 official blog. This article is also useful for Counter-Strike:Global Offensive. If the firm from Seattle puts its desks on wheels , it’s not only for office races but also to share their projects among workers. Here, the modifications made on the two main games from Valve mix up and give an insight on what could be done for the MatchMaking on CS:GO.
It is clear that the two games published by the same company benefit from each other’s developments, provided they remain two different titles in two different styles with different numbers of players. They come with their specificities, in particular about MatchMaking. Wherever possible we will try to best explain but some points could escape. Note that we directly asked about similarities between MatchMaking systems to Valve and we confirmed that the general principles are the same.
Behind the algorithms that are governing these principles are themselves very specific to each game. Indeed, if you won ten matchmakings on Dota2 it did not give you a specific rank or at least, you could not see it.

With two new entrants this week, we look at those who have made it to the highest MMR bracket. The two players, who both came to Europe after TI6 to play for Team Secret , have thrived in the European online scene, even if their results in pro matches may not have been as good as they might have hoped. However, this is still a feat that only a handful have ever achieved.
With MMR constantly changing it is often difficult to keep track of the growing list, so that’s exactly what we’ve done by gathering all the players that have hit 9K MMR at least once so far. He actually hit the milestone while in Moscow, playing at Epicenter. His famous match saw him play Anti Mage and dominate his opponents to hit the 9K barrier in somewhat mundane fashion.
